Monica Martinez, a Special Education Advocate with Suzanne Blattner & Associates in Montgomery County, Maryland, shares what a Special Education Advocate does with you. We start by defining the differences between a Special Education Advocate and an Education Consultant - two roles I had been using interchangeably.
From here our conversation shifted to when families should consider hiring a special education advocate and how to pick one. Monica and I agree it's important to consider personality because this is someone you could be spending a lot of time with, and if they are interfacing with the IEP team it's our professional opinion to work with someone who is collaborative (and can be tough when/if necessary) because it's very likely you'll be working with these team members for a while.
Remember, most staff want your child to be successful. Do your best to keep this in mind as you go through the process, and view those sitting across the table from you as fellow human beings deserving professional respect. We would tell them the same thing - the parents sitting across the table are not just another "number"; they have feelings and deserving of respect as well.
