The story of The Moated Stone contains references to people and places that you may be familiar with or even have visited. This may indeed be the case, although very unlikely unless you are from the village in question.
However, if you are from the village then it is very likely that I already know you or the people you know! Please be assured that nothing contained within this story is aimed to offend or cause anything more that extreme interest.
You will note the author of this short story is David Burns (that’s me). I decided to write about Wadhams Castle and historical Knightly deeds of King Arthur and also acknowledging the philanthropist attributes of the Wadham family.
Plus of course, just to the North of wadhams Castle is the location of Royal Air Force Merryfield or more simply RAF Merryfield built during World War 2. Home of the USAAF and for security reasons by the USAAF during the war, was referred to instead of location. Its USAAF Station Code was "MF".
During May 1944, 1500 American troops of the 101st Airborne Division arrived at Merryfield in preparation for D-Day. Just a part of the 24,000 airborne troops destined for Normandy.
What else? Simply, I wanted to put Wadhams Castle back on the map - it is a great place.
An example of their charitable nature is confirmed in 1606, where the Wadham family built and endowed the “Wadham Almshouses” at Ilton for “eight poore people” of the village.
The Wadham family resided at the moat (known today as Merifield House or Wadhams Castle) for over two centuries (circa 1397 - 1618) and provided both stability and wealth to the region. A reference written about Nicholas Wadham…
“His hospitable house was an inn at all times, a court at Christmas”.
Hence the name Merifield (or Muryfield)!
